FAQ

What are your farming practices for growing vegetables?

We farm today in much the same way as the farms we grew up on. Every acre is nourished and cared for in a way that is not only good for that year’s crops, but more importantly, for future crops and the environment. The way we treat our land and community shapes our future.

Regenerative agriculture is an everyday practice at Tangletown Gardens Farm. We grow without hormones and toxic chemicals and take great pride in our land.We do not use any chemical herbicides or pesticides.  We instead focus on creating a healthy soil ecosystem that creates the most healthy growing environment that translates into healthy and nutritious plants.  We only use NATURAL biologicals and botanicals to control insects when needed.  We have never used herbicides in our production.  Only manual weed control via cultivation, flame weeding, and a good ole hoe.  We work hard to add lots of organic matter by way of compost and manure applications.  In addition, we use cover crops extensively to harvest CO2 from the atmosphere to improve the carbon ratio in our soils.

We essentially use all of the very best Regenerative Agriculture practices for both plants and animals and dovetail them into a system that creates some of the most amazing food we can produce.  The side benefit to doing this is that our food is full of nutrition and our soils keep improving.

Are you Certified Organic?

While we are not "Certified Organic," we uphold and often exceed organic standards. Our customers trust our strict principles and our commitment to producing food without poisons and toxic chemicals. We raise food that we confidently eat and share with our own friends and families.

Do you use chemicals to grow your vegetables?

All of our vegetables are grown without the use of toxic chemicals. We maintain soil fertility using compost, carbon-based fertilizers, and animal manure. How Our Animals Are Raised - DELETE THIS??

How are your cows raised and fed?

Our cattle are rotationally grazed, moving to fresh pasture daily during the growing season. In the winter, they are fed hay that we produce, supplemented with fodder grown all winter long.

How are your chickens raised and fed?

Our broiler chickens (raised for meat) thrive on a developed rotational pasture system. They forage on diverse cover crops that provide both nourishment and habitat for insects, a chicken delicacy. This method results in meat that is more flavorful and healthy.

We ensure our pasture-raised chickens receive a diverse diet, including sprouted grains (fodder). They are never given hormones or antibiotics. While their ration includes some non-GMO corn and soybean meal, a large part of their daily diet comes from the cover crops specifically planted for them on the pastures they graze. All grains used on our farm are non-GMO.

How are your pigs raised and fed?

Our pork comes from heritage breed pigs, which are raised on pasture and fed a diverse diet of whole grains.

What breeds are your heritage breed pigs?

Our heritage breeds include: Berkshire, Large Blacks, Duroc, Red Wattle, Poland China, and Herford.
